This daily correspondence between schools she attended and us gives you a glimpse of our daily life. Most parents of typical children do not communicate on daily basis with the teachers. This gives a reader an insight to how important daily communication is for a child with autism.

Kat has attended school since she was 3 years old. These are school notes that were result of correspondence with her parents and her teachers. We have made comments at a later date reflecting back on the impact of these events. Kats School Notes Index

Sent in tape in back pack.

Kat is generally doing better with eating. She put on her coat with little assistance - after it is placed correctly in front of her. Managing objects such as doors, caps (requiring forearm rotation) has progressed well. Kat prefers play with a drum, looking at self in mirror & singing to herself. She tolerates directed play with fine motor activities only briefly.

Thanks,

J.E.(Occupational Therapist)

Thanks for the tape - we watched it this afternoon. Kat is going very well. She is beginning to seek out adult interaction more & responds well to name. Color pointing is going well, she sorts red, blue, yellow, & green consistently. Eye contact is improving. She points to eyes, nose, mouth, & ears on pictures when given a choice of 2 pictures (for example, I'll show her a picture of eyes & a nose - she must point to the picture I named - she did well with this!) She is also participative, with some help, in circle time activities.

Kat is recovering from an ear infection. The medication she is on gets her hyped up. For the passed week and a half Kat has been making a repetitive movement with her hand. Have you noticed it in school? Is this something that is part of a routine that you are doing? (sign language?) Please let us know. She is slightly breaking out from the medicine she is on, on her hand.

T. & D. (Parents)

I haven't really seen any "repetitive" movements with her hand - could you explain a little more about the hand movements? We do sing a lot of songs, she may be trying to do the hand movements to the song, but I'm not really surewhat movement you are talking about. This week, we will be doing a unit on "The Home." We'll be talking about the kitchen, Bathroom, Bedroom, & Living Room. We'll have lessons about the things that we find in each of the rooms. For example _ We'll have a lesson about the kitchen & emphasize refridgerator, stove, sink, as well as cups, plates, spoons, etc. We'll do this for each room we talk about. This may be good to emphasize at home this week also; labeling & pointing to items in each room.

L.G. (Teacher)

As you work on identifying things in the kitchen a fun way of doing it might be to fill up a sink with water filling it with kitchen items. Use a parallell tak technique - talking about what Kat is doing "Kat is pouring water from a cup" or descriptive statements "You have a big cup." Also putting pictures of item on the item to help with picture/obejct recognition so you can walk around the room & say refridgerator - putting refridgerator - here's a picture of a refridgerator - help her to pt. it to picture.

L.G. (Teacher)

Just a reminder! Can you please send in snack for this week?

Thanks,

R.

Kat does her hand movement wherever she is sitting, ususally at a table. She will slightly bounce her hand on the table and lift it up moving her fingers back & forth. her eyes will follow her hand.

T. & D. (Parents)

We didn't notice any movement today & thanks for sending snack.

Thanks,

R.

We sent in puzzle and video. Kat can do this puzzle at home. We were wondering if she would do it for you at school. You are welcome to play this movie today and please send it home with K1. as we talked with her mother about this.

1990-01-30 We will be picking Kat up at school today at 1:00. please do not send her home on bus.

This week the unit will be "Things for Mealtime". We'll emphasize spoon, fork, knife, & plate as well as setting the table & appropriate creative play session involving play mealtime situations. We'll work on concepts of matching, sorting, & object identification.

L.G. (Teacher)

During mealtime you might want to have Kat give out forks one night with help, spoons the next night & napkins the next etc. Also if you glue onto a place mat a picture of a fork, spoon, napkin, plate, etc. Kat can match & place real object next to picture of object at dinnertime. Work on imitation with objects stirring spoons in pots, pretend to feed doll, you etc. pretend to cut with knife etc. Varry through with washing dirty cup etc.
