Wear a Hat for Kat:

To help raise awareness of the importance mental health understanding Danuta organized a "Hat Day" for May -Mental Health Month at the Voorhees Breakfast Rotary Club. The funds raised were donated to the Alzheimer's Association.

March 1994


This daily correspondence between schools she attended and us gives you a glimpse of our daily life. Most parents of typical children do not communicate on daily basis with the teachers. This gives a reader an insight to how important daily communication is for a child with autism.

Kat has attended school since she was 3 years old. These are school notes that were result of correspondence with her parents and her teachers. We have made comments at a later date reflecting back on the impact of these events. Kats School Notes Index








3/1 Kat was pale & layingaround on her breaks . She then vomited twice (did get an assistant & made it to sink - even tried to clean up the sink ). Hope she's better.

3/2 Kat was fine afterwards , must of been what she ate in the morning !


PS Kat was crying about a video that she saw, Bridget asked her "Why are you crying" She said "Because I am sad " Bridget asked "Why are you sad?"she said "Because I am crying "

Danuta - Wow!!

3/2 I need to observe each person who is working with Kat , some of the note indicate that they may be doing them differently than we are: Is Friday a good day?

Drill 8: she is only supposed to have the verb at this stage ( he and she has not been introduced )

PS : Kat was pale yesterday morning after breakfast we think it might be the cereal . I kept her home just in case she might repeat Tuesday's episode .

3/4 K. & Staff,

Thanks for having me observe, I got a lot of great ideas from everyone we will try and implement them this weekend. I'm looking forward to seeing other "in action " next Tuesday. I'll write another note sunday to let you know how we made out .


Sunday ,

Kat went to PACT concert and had a great time , she danced and big part of it paid attention to the music. She imitated one of the singers and laughed whenever he made a splat sound . She made an approach to a little girl and tried to grab her hands to dance with her. (but when the girl didn't want to she pushed her)

3/8 STEIN CAME IN YESTERDAY she changed a lot of drills and added new ones . Please read notes in blue before starting. I will be over today to observe and explain some ofthem .

3/9 One of the interns came back from the bathroom w/ happy news ( ! ). Kat had finished washing her hands , was waiting for paper towels , and the girl ahead of her gave her one , said "Here". Kat looked at her , took the paper towel , and said " Thank you " ! ! unprompted ! ! We all cheered when we heard about it -

* For " brushing " in Verbs " drill, do you use a toothbrushing picture or hairbrushing picture ?


3/9 C. , which verbs drill doyou mean . Drill 6 we are only testing last for the actions part " see notes from 3/9

3/10 K. & C.

* I am not sure how to get everyone aware of what we are writing , Especially if the note is dirrected to one person . Ithought if we could ask the person to initial it so that we can be sure the person got the message? see notes at top of pg drill 15& 8&21

* I added a second page with Behaviors for drill 21 please review & give me any comments. * only K. &I w/ be doing this initially

* I changed the verbal initiation sheet I will try to remember to keep it to one you may add any criteria for response inthh "R" column

3/11I was working with Kat on community helpers after we were done with the drill. Kat took all the cards from me and pulled out of them , park attendant , station attendant , garbage hauler, reporter and paramedic and put them back in the box where they came from
